Trip Overview
Board on a comprehensive birding journey across 10 districts of Bhutan, personally led by Norbu, founder of Wild Nature Quest and one of Bhutan’s earliest and most experienced bird guides. A true pioneer in Bhutanese ornithology, Norbu has guided renowned international birders, including Steve and Sue Gantlett of Birding World, and worked closely with Tom Stephenson, author of The Warbler Guide.
Norbu’s contributions to bird research in Bhutan are significant—he has recorded the vocalizations of numerous species, with many of his recordings featured in the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Macaulay Library and Xeno-canto, including some of the rarest species previously undocumented in those archives.
This expertly guided tour offers an exceptional opportunity to observe over 300 bird species, including Bhutan’s iconic specialties: Four species of Pheasants, Ward’s Trogon, Ibisbill, Five species of Parrotbills, Yellow-rumped Honeyguide, Beautiful Nuthatch, Summer migrants such as Flycatchers and Cuckoos and Elusive understory birds including Tesias, Shortwings, and Wren-Babblers
In addition to the rich birdlife, this tour also provides opportunities to see 10–15 mammal species, including: Three species of langurs, including the Golden Langur (near-endemic), Malayan Giant Squirrel, Yellow-throated Marten, and Himalayan Goral
Cultural Highlights Include: A visit to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), Bhutan’s most iconic and revered pilgrimage site, Exploration of the stunning Punakha Dzong, a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture, and A visit to a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse, where you’ll experience the warmth and hospitality of local village life
This tour blends world-class birding with deep cultural immersion, making it an unforgettable journey through the heart of Bhutan’s natural and spiritual heritage.
