We were on a 14 days Nature Photography tour with Off to Bhutan, there were 6 of us with 3 experienced nature photographers.
Our trip was a mixture of cultural visits and birding, we spent a couple of days visiting the beautiful Dzongs at Paro and Thimpu and were fortunate to attend the famous Para Festival. Our guide, Sherab and the driver were excellent and they went out their ways and took good care of us. The hotels we stayed were fabulous and the camping was comfortable and fun. Sherab is not only very knowledgeable about the history and the local culture of Bhutan but is also an excellent birder. He brought us to all the hot spots for birds on our wish list. We were thrilled by the beauty of Bhutan. We witnessed, in its scenery, culture, people, and of course, birds. Our 14-day trip was truly fruitful and enjoyable.
We were also impressed by the way the trip was organized. This is one of our best bird photography trips and all 6 of us in the group decided to go back again to Bhutan in the near future and will book with Off to Bhutan again. Highly recommended!
Norbu was a great guide and we would have no hesitation in recommending him to any keen birder visiting Bhutan. He was extremely knowledgeable on the calls and had an intimate knowledge of all the Country’s birding sites and specifically, he knew exactly where all the key species occurred. He organized the logistics for the trip superbly and everything ran like clock work.
We spent ten days birding with Norbu who was an excellent birder with extensive knowledge of Bhutan’s birds and culture. His eyesight and hearing was amazing finding us many birds we might not have seen. He is a very friendly, interesting guy and very good company who went out of his way to make sure our trip was enjoyable and that the hotels and meals met our expectations. I would (and have already) recommended Norbu to anyone who is thinking about visiting Bhutan.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Norbu over the last few years, tallying almost 3 months of time with him in Bhutan. His knowledge of the vocalizations and habits of all of the rarest and most sought-after birds in the country is without parallel. In fact, he has personally been responsible for finding locations for many species that, a few years ago, were never even seen by most groups visiting the country.
He has also researched and recorded the vocalizations of many of the species of Bhutan. And his recordings for some of the rarest species reside in Cornell’s Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds and xeno canto, including several species not before represented in their collection.
Of equal importance, Norbu has shown incredible energy and passion for making sure every guest has the pleasure of seeing all of the target birds for each location. I have seen him spend many extra hours, even in difficult conditions, searching for trogons or wren-babblers, just to be sure everyone had a chance to see these amazing species.
And finally, he has a great knowledge of the history and culture of Bhutan, and contributes this important and valuable background to every group he serves. This knowledge extends to the infrastructure and logistics of the country. And he has always worked very hard to ensure all of his clients have the most comfortable and smoothest experience possible.
When visiting any country it is important to support that country’s own people, ensuring the resources needed to conserve and explore the culture and environment stay in the country as much as possible. Working with Norbu fills these criteria. And you also gain the benefit of traveling with one of the most knowledgeable and experienced Bhutan bird guides from anywhere in the world.
Norbu is undoubtedly Bhutan’s top birder and, with now 15 Years of experience leading birders, he knows all the key sites really well and, Importantly, he is hot on the calls for locating all the scarcer species. He is also extremely good company and tirelessly helpful. I recommend him most highly.
